Voices of South Carolina Spirituality

Exploring Lived Faith Traditions through Story, Presence, and Partnership

The Project

Voices of South Carolina Spirituality is a public-facing South Carolina oral history project led by Ronald S. Green, professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Coastal Carolina University. The project uplifts the lived spiritual traditions of South Carolinians through oral histories, storytelling events, and contemplative engagement. Students, faculty, and community members collaborate to listen deeply, share stories meaningfully, and help preserve the expressions of faith, religion, and spirituality across the state.

At its heart, the project centers contentment, connection, and quiet presence, seeking not only to document spiritual life in South Carolina but also to invite reflection and dialogue that honors everyday experience and enduring wisdom.

A Collaborative Oral History Lab

Through interviews, legacy storytelling, and intergenerational conversations, the project builds an oral history archive of South Carolina faith communities that captures:

  • Personal reflections on faith, spirituality, and resilience
  • Community stories that highlight belonging, care, and service
  • Varied understandings of the sacred, the ethical, and the everyday

Faculty and students work together to conduct interviews, edit transcripts, and curate themes for public events, teaching, and community reflection.
